Dr. Zehra Bilgin, a faculty member in the History of Mathematical Sciences department, presented a paper at the international conference titled "Historiography of Mathematical Symbolism" held in Edinburgh, Scotland, between September 15–19, 2025.
The conference, hosted by The University of Edinburgh, was organized as part of the "Rethinking the History of Mathematical Symbolism" project, which is funded by The British Academy. The event brought together historians of mathematics from various countries around the world, featuring presentations that offered diverse perspectives on the history of mathematical symbolism.
Dr. Bilgin's presentation, titled "The Historiography of Mathematical Symbols in Salih Zeki's Kāmūs-i Riyāżiyyāt,"explored the historiography of mathematical symbols through the lens of Kāmūs-i Riyāżiyyāt—a mathematics encyclopedia written by Salih Zeki, one of the leading figures in the Ottoman scientific community.
The conference opened a discussion on how mathematical symbolism was shaped in different cultural contexts, strengthening international academic collaborations in the field.
