Dr Taha Yasin Arslan, our colleague from the Department of the History of Technology, conducted a workshop for the construction and use of astrolabes in the city of Oxford, UK which was hosted jointly by History of Science Museum, University of Oxford and Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

The attendees had chance to first-hand experience the stages of construction of an astrolabe and its use via application methods such measuring time from the altitude of the sun. In the event, a couple replica astrolabes made by Dr Arslan, which was based on original astrolabe that are kept in the collections of the History of Science Museum, are also employed.
